Old Testament - Genesis 5 - January 17, 2022

 1/17/2022 – Genesis 5

My study manual gives an interesting opening to Genesis 5: “Most of Genesis 5 is a list of the generations between Adam and Eve and Noah. We read a lot of names, but we don’t learn much about them. Then we read about Enoch, six generations from Adam, who is described with this intriguing but unexplained line: “And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him: (Genesis 5:24). Surely there’s a story behind that. But without further explanation, the list of generations resumes....Thankfully, Moses 6 reveals the details of Enoch’s story, and it’s quite a story, We learn of Enoch’s humility, his insecurities, the potential God saw in him, and the great work he performed as God’s prophet. WE also get a clearer picture of the family of Adam and Eve as it progressed through the generations. We read of Satan’s “great dominion” but also of parents who taught children “the ways of God” and of “preachers of righteousness” who “spake and prophesied. (Moses 6:15, 21, 23) Especially precious is what we learn about the doctrine these parents and preachers taught: faith , repentance, baptism, and the receiving of the Holy Ghost (see Moses 6:50-52). That doctrine, like the priesthood that accompanies it, “was in the beginning [and] shall be in the end of the world also” (Moses 6:7)”.

Genesis is sometimes hard for me to understand. But I will be patient and not skip any reading, I will at least become more familiar with some of the people who first made their way in this new world.

Genesis 5 begins by explaining that it is “the book of the generations of Adam.” (v1).  In v 3 we learn a bit about another of Adam’s children, Seth, and that one of Seth’s children was Enos. And that Cainan was one of Enos’ childen. We also learn of Mahalaleel, one of Cainan’s sons—and that Jared was one of Mahalaleel’s sons, and Jared was the father of Enoch.

V 22 tells us that Mathuselah was Enoch’s son, and that Enoch walked with God.

If time was reckoned in the way we do now, these men’s early lives covered centuries. Enoch is said to have lived only 365 years, and then, as v 24 says “and he was not; for God took him.” But his son Mathuselah lived on, and had a son named Lemech, who was the father of Noah. And Noah was the father of Shem, Ham and Japeth.

I really am looking forward to tomorrow’s reading of Moses 6.
