Old Testament - Psalms 27-30 - August 10, 2022
8/10/2022 – Psalms 27-30
Psalm 27 is another psalm written by David. He starts with “The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?” And then there is v 4 where the goal of his life is simple stated: “One thing have I desired of the Lord, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord, and to enquire in his temple.” We could all do well by adopting this has our goal in life.
In v 10 David shows his firm beliefs in his Father: “When my father and my mother forsake me, then the Lord will take me up.” The Lord’s love and concern for us goes beyond any we know.
V 13: “I had fainted unless I had believed to see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.” There are times in our lives when only faith in the Lord can see us through.
In v 14 David tells us exactly what we need to do: “Wait on the Lord: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the Lord.” This makes me think of another verse that is meaningful to me: It is Mary’s first reaction when the Lord came to her with His amazing news: “Behold, the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word.” (Luke 1:38)
Psalm 28: David has certainly gone through perilous times, and because of his continued closeness to the Lord he has learned how the Lord will answer our prayers: “The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusted in him, and I am helped: therefore my heart greatly rejoiceth; and with my song will I praise him.”
He continues in Psalm 29:11 - “The Lord will give strength unto his people; the Lord will bless his people with peace.” This reminds me that the strength of the Lord IS peace, and we can certainly find peace through Him…even in perilous times.
In Psalm 30, David continues to recognize the Lord’s help, and so he praises his Heavenly Father and gives much thanks to Him. But in v 5, he also reminds of us how the Lord sometimes works: “… weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.” And then in v 11, David tells us some of the ways the Lord helps and comforts us individually: “Thou hast turned for me my mourning into dancing: thou hast put off my sackcloth, and girded me with gladness.”
