Pearl of Great Price - Moses 7:48-69 - January 31, 2022
1/31/2022 – Moses 7:48-69
In v’s 48-49 Enoch “heard the earth mourn” over the “wickedness of my children” and the “filthiness which is gone forth out of me”. Elder Joseph Fielding Smith, then a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, wrote: “The Lord here [in Doctrine and Covenants 88] informs us that the earth on which we dwell is a living thing, and that the time must come when it will be sanctified from all unrighteousness. In the Pearl of Great Price, when Enoch is conversing with the Lord, he hears the earth crying for deliverance from the iniquity upon her face. . . . It is not the fault of the earth that wickedness prevails upon her face, for she has been true to the law which she received and that law is the celestial law. Therefore the Lord says that the earth shall be sanctified from all unrighteousness”
Enoch sees the flood that Noah and his family survived, and Enoch pleads with the Lord to help and bless Noah and his children and their children. And then the Lord explained: “I am Messiah, the King of Zion, the Rock of Heaven, which is broad as eternity; whoso cometh in at the gate and climbeth up by me shall never fall…for they shall come forth with songs of everlasting joy.” (v 53)
The Lord showed Enoch the time of His coming to the earth—ending with his crucifixion, and the mourning of the earth and the saints. The Lord then assured Enoch that He would come again “in the last days of wickedness and vengeance” (v 60) But before that time, the Lord tells Enoch that “a veil of darkness shall cover the earth; and the heavens shall shake, and also the earth; and great tribulations shall be among the children of men…” (v 61) BUT when the time is right, then “righteousness will I send down out of heaven; and truth will I send forth out of the earth, to bear the testimony of mine Only Begotten; his resurrection from the dead [we have that Book of Mormon, and hopefully the spiritual strength to recognize and to follow the truths it can carry into our hearts] ; yea and also the resurrection of all men and righteousness and truth will I cause to sweep the earth as with a flood, to gather mine elect from the four corners of the earth unto a place which I shall prepare, an Holy City, that my people may gird up their loins, and be looking forth for the time of my coming; for there shall be my tabernacle, and it shall be called Zion, A New Jerusalem.” (v 62)
He goes on in v 63 that at that time Enoch and his holy city will come down to be with the saints in this New Jerusalem, and it will be a wonderful time. “But before that day he saw great tribulations among the wicked; and he also saw the sea, that it was troubled, and men’s hearts failing them, looking forth with fear for the judgments of the Almighty God, which should come upon the wicked.” (66)
As I ponder this, my course is to work to be prayerful, staying close to the Lord and the Holy Ghost and taking full advantage of Christ’s atonement to help me make amends for my mistakes. I also pray to continue to be guided by the promptings of the Holy Ghost, as well as being very aware that I am to be a neighbor and a friend – loving them as I love my own family. Am I successful in those goals?.…sometimes; but the times I fail at least teach me how to do better the next time.
