Abraham 4:
This is about God’s creation of our earth. I find it very interesting that the word ‘create’ is from a Hebrew word that means “to organize”.
The synopsis of this chapter speaks of “the Gods plan of creation”. And then v 1 tells us that “the Lord said: Let us go down. And they went down at the beginning and they, that is the Gods, organized and formed the heavens and the earth.” V 3 begins with the words: “And they (the Gods) said: Let there be light; and there was light.” The phrase “and the Gods” are in almost every one of the 31 verses of this chapter. Bruce R McConkie once wrote: “In the ultimate and final sense of the word, the Father is the Creator of all things. That he used the Son and others to perform many of the creative acts, delegating to them his creative power, and he simply chooses others to act for him in many of his creative enterprises.”
V 2 speaks of the empty and desolate earth the Gods were working with, and tells us that “the spirit of the Gods was brooding upon the face of the waters.” Brooding is another word that really attracted my attention, and this is what I discovered: “Brooding” is what a hen does with her eggs and chicks; she broods over them meaning she protects, warms, nurtures, and defends them. That makes me feel that this is how God the Father, God the Son, and the Holy Ghost, and evidently others who watch over us, do so with love and the intention to help us move safely forward.
This chapter takes us through the entire creative process, and then v 18 tells us “And the Gods watched those things which they had ordered until they obeyed.” I think that is what they do to when WE are placed on the earth. They watch over us. If we want their help, we merely talk to them in our prayers…asking for their help and their guidance. They are there! V 22 tells us how they watched over the waters on earth: “And the Gods said: We will bless them, and cause them to be fruitful and multiply…” If this is how they help the fish of the seas, how much they will help us!!
V 27 tells us how they formed us—male and female—“to have dominion” on this earth. In v 28 “…the Gods said: We will bless them…We will cause them to be fruitful…”
And finally in v 31 “the Gods said: We will do everything that we have said, and organized them; and behold, they shall be very obedient…” That’s God’s plan. That should be our plan too!
