Pearl of Great Price - Moses 6:40-56 - January 27, 2022
1/27/2022 – Moses 6:40-59 [I’m still in Moses 6—haven’t figure out I’m reading this again)
Enoch has seen and spoken with the Lord, and he follows the Lord’s instructions no matter what they entail. President Monson once said: “It’s not enough to wish, it’s not enough to dream, it’s not enough to promise. We must do.” And that’s just what Enoch did! He is going into areas where there is much evil. When the people there ask about him, he tells simply and honestly: “I came out of the land of Cainan, the land of my fathers, a land of righteousness unto this day. And my father taught me all the ways of God.” (v 41) Enoch answers their questions, he teaches them many things about God, but he keeps the profound spiritual things the Lord has revealed unto him to himself. The people he is teaching, are not ready to receive a higher law or standard.
In v 46 Enoch tells them that his people keep a “book of remembrance” that they have written, according to the pattern given by the finger of God; and it is given in our own language. In the Bible Dictionary, it states that a book of remembrance is the scriptures. I love it that the Church publishes our books of remembrances in so many languages! For when I spend time every day with my scriptures, my days are always better and brighter!
Enoch explains the fall of Adam to these people, telling them that the fall brought death, and misery and woe, and that Satan is now among them and he “tempteth them to worship him; and men have become carnal, sensual, and devilish, and [thus] are shut out from the presence of the Lord.” (49) But when Enoch had first learned all these things from the Lord, and was burdened with the sadness of it all—the Lord continued to teach him. The Lord taught him about the power of repentance, with His promise that “if thou wilt turn unto me, and hearken unto my voice, and believe, and repent of all thy transgressions, and be baptized, even in the water, in the name of mine Only Begotten Son…whereby salvation shall come unto the children of men, ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost, asking all things in his name, and whatsoever ye shall ask, it shall be given you.” (v 52)
In v 55-59 the Lord speaks about the posterity of Adam who are and will be born into a fallen world, “even so when they begin to grow up, sin conceiveth in their hearts, and they taste the bitter, that they may know to prize the good. And it is given unto them to know good from evil; wherefore they are agents unto themselves and I have given unto you another law and commandment. Wherefore teach it unto your children, that all men everywhere… must repent or they can in nowise inherit the kingdom of God…Therefore I give unto you a commandment, to teach these things freely unto your children….” That is such an important burden placed upon us as parents, but if we are able to help them to learn to go to Him and to lean on Him in difficult times, then there is a closeness to the Lord that changes everything for the better.
