Old Testament - 1 Kings 18 - July 4, 2022

7/4/2022 – 1 Kings 18

After enduring the 3 years of drought the Lord asked Elijah to before Ahab the king. His wife, Zezebel, had had many of the prophets killed, and the Lord said that when that occurred that He would “end rain upon the earth”.  During that time, Obadiah, the governor of the king’s house, at the same time Obadiah took 100 prophets, hid them in a cave, and fed them bread and water—“for he feared the Lord greatly” (v 3)

At the same time, Ahab had Obadiah working with him in an effort to find “all fountains of water, and unto all brooks: …to find grass to save the horses and the mules alive, that we lose not all the beasts.” (v 5) They each chose opposite directions. In Obadiah’s travels, he ran into Elijah. Elijah asked Obadiah to tell King Ahab that Elijah was near-by. Obadiah was worried that King Ahab would kill him for bringing such bad news to the king.

Obadiah was not killed by King Ahab, instead King Ahab suggested that he and Elijah should have a contest that would prove whose god was really God.  Both sides decided that they would offer a sacrifice, and the sacrifice that the Lord work accept, would indicate the true God.

Elijah prepared the offering to Heavenly Father, but before lighting it, he poured water over the wood 3 times. When it was time to light the wood, Elijah prayed “hear me, O Lord, hear me, that this people may know that thou art the Lord God, and that thou hast turned their heart back again.” (v36) Then “the fire of the Lord fell, and consumed the burnt sacrifice and the wood and the stones and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench. And when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces; and said, The Lord, he is the God: the Lord, he is the God.” (v 39)

Then they saw a little cloud that turned into a great rain storm. The drought was over.

The Lord’s power is greater than the power of men, and the Lord will always help us know that He is the true God. We only have to ask, and believe. “Yea Lord, I believe, help thou mine unbelief. “

The people were astonished and “fell on their faces”…saying “The Lord, he is the God; the Lord , he is the God.” (v 39)  That’s when Elijah said to the people ”Take the prophets of Baal; let not one of them escape. And they took them” Elijah then went with the people and slew all the false prophets. (v 40)

Next Elijah went to the top of Mt Carmel. He prayed that the drought be ended. A small cloud was seen on the horizon, and then it became black and filled the heavens. The drought was over!
