Old Testament - Psalms 127 & 128 - August 24, 2022
8/24/2022 – Psalms 127, 128
Psalm 127 speaks of our children being a cherished gift from the Lord. The first 2 verses speak of the importance of having the Lord as a part of our family, a sure part of our home, and a part of all of our endeavors. I wrote this beside these verses during one of my times of reading the Old Testament: “Invite the Lord into all your efforts – or they are for naught”. Having His spirit close to us, changes the way we do things and how we think of those efforts. His spirit lifts us and teaches us and brings a sweet happiness into all our efforts. V 1: “Except the Lord build the house, they labour in vain that build it”. V 2 promises that keeping close to the Lord will always help us—especially during our difficult times when “he giveth his beloved sleep”. He won’t keep difficult times away from us, as we can learn much as we make our way through those times, but He certainly softens those times with comfort and with the courage to continue forward.
But back to children being a precious gift: “Lo, children are an heritage of the Lord; and the fruit of the womb is his reward. As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; so are the children… .Happy is the man [and woman!] that hath his quiver full of them…” I love our children. I admire them. I cherish them. And the wondrous part is that I feel the same from them! What could be more precious in this life?
Psalm 128 speaks of the blessings that come to us as we ‘walk in His ways’. “For thou shalt eat the labour of thine hands: happy shalt thou be, and it shall be well with thee.” I have often felt this very thing, and I thank my Heavenly Father for this warm gift. I have learned that when difficult times come, I can turn to Him. Sometimes I feel his sure guidance, and sometimes I feel a warmth promising me that He is near and that I will be able to make it through the difficulties ahead. My remembrance of these times is what gives me courage to march through the new difficulties that always seem to arise. Being close to my Father makes all the difference.
