Old Testament - Psalms 135-139 - August 25, 2022

8/25/2022 – Psalms 135-139

Psalm 135 is a psalm of praise for our Heavenly Father. The writer goes through the history of the Lord giving help and comfort to those that believe in, and follow, Him. It is an appropriate reminder that as we go to our Father for help and comfort, we should be just as focused on going to Him in thanks as we recognize the help He gives to us, and the “map” His scriptures provide for our returning to Him.

Psalm 136 also reminds us of the importance of giving “thanks unto God for all things, for his mercy endureth forever”.  He helps us in so many ways, if we can just look and listen for the mercy He gives to us, for the wisdom that He will share with us just for the asking, for the function and beauty of our earth, for all the times He has heard our prayers and has answered them. He sees us, He knows us, He loves us, and He wants us to return to Him having learned important skills, and having strengthened our faith.

Psalm 137 speaks of some of the most difficult times the Israelites suffered through, and the importance of keeping their faith and their love for Heavenly Father during their most difficult times as they lived through their captivity in Babylon.

Psalm 139 is another of David’s psalms as he assures us that the Lord has “searched” and thus “knows” each one of us so that He “understandest my thought”, and “compassest my path and my lying down, and are acquainted with all my ways.”  “Whither shall I go from thy spirit? Or whither shall I flee from thy presence? If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there…” The spirit of the Lord can be found in any place and in any condition.  JST v 8: “The Lord will perfect me in knowledge, concerning his kingdom. I will praise thee O lord, forever; for thou are merciful, and wilt not forsake the works of thine own hands.”

One of my favorite verses is v 11: “Surely the darkness shall cover me; even then shall be light about me…”. And then there is v 17 “How precious also are thy thoughts unto me, O God! How great is the sum of them!”

David ends this psalm with these verses: “Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way I me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” The Lord knows us all. He can lovingly correct us and lead us toward him if we but ask…there is never embarrassment when working with the Lord.
