Old Testament - Amos 7-9 - November 18, 2022
11/18/2022 – Amos 7-9
In Chapter 7, “Amos relates how he was called of God to be a prophet, and then he tells them some of the things the Lord had revealed to Amos about the near future of the House of Israel: “the high places [where they had worshiped false gods] …. shall be desolate and the sanctuaries of Israel shall be laid waste…” (v 9). And in 11 He lets them know that they will now, once again, live in captivity.
In v 12 leaders of the country asked Amos to leave and go to Judah and prophesy to the people there; he was not to prophesy any more in their county, but to go somewhere else far away. Amos’s response to that was to tell the king, once again, that it was Amos’ duty to prophesy right then and there. And then Amos goes even further and prophesies about the Last Days.
In Chapter 8, Amos continues to warn Israel of their approaching downfall, and famine – not just of famine of food, but a famine of hearing the Lord’s words. Israel was told that the songs of the temple would change to howlings, and that there would be troubles of every kind.
And then Amos tells them more about the Last Days, one of which was that the sun would go down at noon, and He “will darken the earth in the clear day”(v 9).
In Chapter 9 the Lord tells them that Israel will be gathered again in their own land. The chapter synopsis tells us the “Israel shall be sifted among all nations—In the last days, they will be gathered again into their own land, and it shall become productive.” And He assures them that in the last days, “I will bring again the captivity of my people of Israel, and they shall build the waste cities and inhabit them; and they shall plant vineyards, and drink the wine thereof; they shall also make gardens and eat the fruit of them. And I will plant them upon their land, and they shall no more be pulled up out of their land which I have given them, saith the Lord thy God. (v’s 14-15)
That is already beginning to happen!
